i’m going to nyc this weekend. i thought i could get there using the sky miles i racked up with american airlines, i have 7500+ miles, so i thought i could get there no sweat. all you google maps enthusiasts can vouch that it’s only 511 miles from raleigh, right?
wrong!
well, wrong according to american airlines. it actually takes 25,000 miles to get from rdu to nyc. coincidentally, it takes 25,000 miles to get from just about anywhere to just about anywhere else with american airlines. i thought the lady was yanking me, until she started laughing, “oh, yeah, this kind of confusion happens all the time. we shouldn’t call them miles, really, we should call them points or something.”
hardy har har har.
so i’m not going for free, but i am going for cheap. and, more importantly, it’s keeping with my vow to travel more and to be more spontaneous.
here is a long but non-comprehensive list of things i want to do while in new york:
- eat hamburgers and hotdogs with meredith’s family friday evening
- watch fireworks over a river on the roof of a car friday night
- sleep in to some ungodly hour saturday morning because we were out way too late friday night (something like 9:30 would be fantastic)
- spend saturday in the city
- spend sunday by the pool
- eat at rizzo’s
- get bo’s in brooklyn
- visit jeff and cat and marielle and anyone else who is still in town
- student rush (do they still do these?) sunday in the park with george and in the heights
- crash a private party
- get lost and get directions in spanish
- make friends of 10 strangers
