here’s a blurb from imdb:
there are heroes, there are superheroes… and then there’s hancock (will smith). conflicted, sarcastic, and misunderstood, hancock’s well-intentioned heroics get the job done, but always seem to leave damage in their wake, with the public wondering why they put up with him. but hancock doesn’t care what other people think, until the day he saves the life of pr executive ray embrey (jason bateman), and the superhero begins to realize that he may have a vulnerable side after all. facing that will be his greatest challenge yet — and a task that may prove impossible as ray’s wife, mary (charlize theron), insists that hancock is a lost cause.
here’s a trailer they put up on youtube:
and here’s what i think:
like many superhero action movies, hancock had its ups (the very beginning, some more in the middle, and the very end) and its downs (the hour and fifteen that’s left over). what’s the deal with putting so much plot in action films? strike that last comment, i’m just goofin. naturally, compared to the action, the downs were slow, but they were still pretty good. am i saying it was a bad movie? not at all. would i see it again? it’s a date. i liked it. and the more i think about it, the more i like it. it was very entertaining, visually speaking it was fun to look at, the music worked well, will smith’s gave a great performance, jason bateman was hilarious, and charlize theron was smokin hot.
[edit: at the time i wrote this, i didn't realize the above statement was insensitive. if you don't think it's insensitive then you've fallen into the same trap as me, my friend. ok, sure, ms. theron is smokin hot, but let's not forget that she is an accomplished, well-respected, and an academy award-winning actor. she delivered a stellar performance, especially in the closing scenes of the film. she was moving and had me hanging on every word. thanks for calling me out, lauren.]
but beware! the movie itself is a spoiler! they practically spoon feed you the ending 20 minutes in. if you wanna catch the flick, and you’ve at least got the mental capacity of a lemon wedge, don’t think! just watch!
oh, and keep your eyes out for that awesome nike commercial they threw in at the end.

Steve! I’m pretty sure Ms. Theron would not appreciate you giving Will Smith and Jason Bateman high fives for their actin’ and then just commenting on her appearance. She’s got a freaking academy award! Can we not treat her as merely eye candy?
I know, I know, everyone talks about female actors like that unless they are Merly Streep, but I just got done reading this and it’s making me testy:

Just stumbled through here while reading up on the Bechdel test. On a day I was feeling fairly weary about the way my gender is portrayed in the media, this exchange put a big smile on my face. Thank you for getting it.
