ON THE KICKOFF OF HUMANA AND THE OPENING OF BRINK!

March 21, 2009 by Steven Rausch

i really want to get back to blogging, so i’m moving away from the monthly emails and doing just that. a lot’s happened since the last update. lemme fill you in.

we opened shipwrecked! february 5 and closed it on the 28. we had a great run. for those of you who may not recall, i was cast as a foley artist. i helped to provide sound effects and the musical score for the production. the whole show was very theatre-of-the-mind meets warner brothers saturday morning cartoons. people really enjoyed it. and the cast was out of this world. rick mcmillan played louis de rougemont, the story’s protagonist; and melody butiu and eric bondoc played the rest of the characters — probably more than 25 between the two of them.

i was also the rehearsal assistant for ameriville, a new show by universes, directed by chay yew. it was the first show that opened this year’s humana festival. it’s a hip hop theatre piece that examines the state of the union through the lens of hurricane katrina. it was truly electrifying to be in the room with universes. to see their process, the way they write, the way they critique each other. hip hop theatre is something that i’d love to get into. it was great to have that kind of behind the scenes access into what the creation of it can look like.

the anthology writers also came back into town! we had a lot of work to do on brink! scripts were finalized, and we got down to business. we worked all day, and then, in true apprentice style, we partied all night. looking back, it feels like we’d been rehearsing brink! for months, but, i guess that’s kinda true. i mean, we did start working on anthology way back in october when the writers first came to town. at any rate, we’ve been rehearsing for a while and last night we opened. we opened to a PACKED house. the show was sold, then so many empty seat passes were requested that they stopped giving them out and just told people to stand. and there were standers. everywhere. there were even people watching from the grid 35 feet above the stage because there was no more standing room. and we rocked the house. we held for so much laughter and applause that we added 30+ minutes to the show. last night was by far the greatest performance experience of my life. a true highlight of my time here. i’ll never forget it.

I’M NOT DEAD

September 27, 2008 by Steven Rausch

Hi. It’s been a while, yes, I know. In an effort to stay in touch and up-to-date with the 9 of you who still check my blog, I decided to download a WordPress widget for my iPhone on the wireless in the theater from behind the spotlight up in the grid some 30 or more feet above the very actors I’m lighting. Oh, hold up, my que….

The neighbor’s wireless has been out since the wind storm and my dad doesn’t have Internet anymore and I just don’t have time to updat from the theater. Times are hard all over. But I’m working on it. Even though now may not be the best oh, hold up…

Even though now may not be the best time, I am working on it.

NO POWER AND SOLO MIOS

September 17, 2008 by Steven Rausch

so ike came through and knocked out the power. my dad and i have been in the dark for 3 days now and it’s already having dramatic effects on us. my dad is becoming an alcoholic because waiting for me at the bar is more fun than waiting for me in the dark, and i’m becoming a narcoleptic because reading scripts by candlelight is oh so sleep-inducing. but at least we know what’s what, and we’ve admitted to our problems, so we’re already one step up on those issues.

so much stuff has gone down since my last legitimate update. last week we worked with a guest artist from new york, annie lanzillotto. she was helping us create and shape our solo mios. we talked a lot about structure, delivery, you know, logistics, but it never really sank in until we constructed our caves. we made our caves by claiming random nooks and crannies and then we covered every possible surface with butcher paper. we performed whatever “ritual” we had to before we entered our newfound space, and then we wrote whatever entered our minds on the walls with sharpies. it was wild and savage and it worked. for me, i blindfolded myself with my jacket and picked up my ipod. i found a song that spoke to me, one that i felt deep connections with, and set it on repeat. and then i just wrote. and wrote. and wrote. most of what came out was illegible, but i was still shocked by the product.

i really need a haircut. again. god, my hair grows so fast! i need to find loraine, the costume designer for a christmas carol, and i need to convince her that my hair will be long again by the end of november. i just don’t have time…

THE NEW IPODS

September 9, 2008 by Steven Rausch

the funnest ipod ever. millions of songs. thousands of movies. hundreds of games. the new ipod touch. this touch is sporting a sleek new design, but, what i love most is the new genius feature that creates playlists by automatically finding songs that sound like they belong together, taking most of the legwork out of creating playlists!

nano-chromatic. new design. new features. now in 8gb and 16gb. ipod nano rocks like never before. the nano is shakin’ sexy its new aluminum and glass ass in a dazzling rainbow of colors. just like the touch, the nano has the genius playlist-making feature, but, also like the touch and iphone, the nano now has an accelerometer! flip it on its side to see your stuff in widescreen!

get your groove on. in four new colors. ipod shuffle, the world’s most wearable music player, now clips on in more vibrant blue, green, pink, and red. wear up to 500 songs on your sleeve.

discover itunes 8. rediscover your music. new genius features and better ways to browse put music at the center of your entertainment world.

ok, ok, ok, i know i haven’t actually updated anything about myself lately, but today is apple’s day and i’m not going to ruin it. i’ll update a little something about me later.

how will you create your universe?

September 6, 2008 by Steven Rausch

i’m not one to get excited about the release of video games (september 7 — tomorrow!), but i just can’t help myself when it comes to spore. you get to create and guide your creature through five stages of evolution, the cell phase, the creature phase, the tribal phase, the civilization phase, and the space phase.

September 2, 2008 by Steven Rausch

i removed the gum video because i didn’t want people to get the wrong impression…

i really shouldn’t have put it up in the first place…

if you missed it, you didn’t really miss much. i just chewed 53+ pieces of gum at once. actually, you missed an epic glob of gum.

Meet the SoHo Hos

Hipster girl #1: I’m so hungover, I just want to be hanging out on a roof somewhere drinking a vodka soda.
Hipster girl #2: I don’t want a roof, I don’t even wanna drink. I want to be laying under the covers with an ice pack on my vagina, sobbing.
